Hidden Beauty

"Beauty is in hiding," a famous Zen saying goes. To me, it means that forms are not beau- tiful or ugly in and of themselves, but they can appear so through an act of formal elision. Mascara is a form of hijab; it hides one part to reveal, as beautiful, another.
The subject of hijab has been, and remains more so today, a contentious political issue since the beginning of Iran's Islamic Revolution of 1979. It was not immediately enacted into law. To many it was seen as an imposition on a sector of the society, without a clear legal definition, to perhaps control socio-sexual tendencies, but in the name of protecting them from harm or as the government also put it "Evil desires".
What hijab has done, in actuality, is to single out (in both senses of the word) women as objects of desire. There is little I can do with hijab that could open a vista to understanding its mainsprings and whether this was the real objective of hijab is of little relevance.
In this series I wanted to show how erotic becomes a much stronger dynamic through coverage and deprivation.
